MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICIES

The following are guidelines for the physical education curriculum at the middle school.  It is the student’s responsibility to read and know this information.

Equipment:

All students are expected to dress in a physical education uniform.  The uniform consists of black shorts, which are mid-thigh, ash grey t-shirt with the physical education logo, white tube socks, and gymnasium shoes with a good arch support.  All of these items should be well marked with the full name on the hem of the t-shirt, inside waistband of trunks, bottom of the socks, and inside each shoe.

The school will have some swimsuits and towels available for the students.  These suits and towels will be turned in daily to be laundered at the school.  Students may bring their own swimsuit provided it is 100% nylon or lycra material.  The girl’s swimsuit must be one piece.  Students wishing to have personal effects such as deodorant, soap, shampoo and comb are responsible for keeping those items locked in their locker.  If shampoo is used, it must be in a plastic container.  Absolutely no aerosol cans or glass containers allowed.

The department does not recommend interchanging of clothing between students.  It is imperative that uniforms be taken home frequently to be laundered for personal health protection and protection of others.

During cool weather, warmer clothing may be a necessity instead of the required physical education uniform.

Excuses:

All excuses should be reported to the middle school office before 8:15AM.  Parents should call 995-3013, or send a note with their child.

Parents may excuse their children for three days each semester.  If further excuses are needed, a doctor’s note must be furnished.  Lengthy medical excuses may require the student to be placed in a study hall.

A student that is excused from physical education activities will not be able to participate in extra curricular activities that same day.  There are some exceptions, for example:  a student with a broken leg would be able to participate in a music activity.

Locks, Lockers, Locker Room:

Students are assigned a lock and a small individual locker compartment for physical education equipment. Students should keep lockers locked at all times and not tell anyone the locker combination.  The tall lockers are to be empty at the end of each class.

Students are responsible for their locker.  If the lock is lost, the school is to be reimbursed for the replacement.  Students should show care and respect for locks and lockers and avoid slamming lids and locker doors.  The dials on the locks should be rotated after the lock is put in place.  Students who get in a hurry sometimes just leave the lock hanging there, and their clothes are not secure.

While in the locker room, students should avoid whistling, yelling, singing, shaking lockers or loitering.   As soon as they are dressed for activity, they must report

to their activity area.  Showers must be turned off when showering is finished.  Towels

should be returned to the laundry cart before the students leave.  After dressing from showering, students should sit on the bench by their locker until the instructor excuses them.

Accidents and injuries should be reported to the physical education instructor on the day they happen.

Use of Equipment:

Proper care and use of all equipment is essential.  Permission from a physical education instructor is needed in order to use equipment in demonstrations, speeches, and plays.  All equipment should be returned promptly after usage.  Students need permission to enter equipment rooms and the instructor’s offices.

Swimming Pool:

Students should shower thoroughly before entering the pool and after swimming.  No running is allowed in the pool area.  No diving in the shallow water.  Instructors will also emphasize additional safety expectations.  Students should not enter the pool area unless an instructor or lifeguard is present and on duty.

Class Organization and Conduct in Class:

Sixth & seventh grade students have physical education every other day. Eighth grade students will have physical education every other day ONE semester only.  Students explore learning activities, aquatics, combative activities, and physical fitness activities.

Roll call is taken ten minutes after the first bell.  Each activity will have a roll call location.  Each student must be at “home base.”  Announcements and instructions are given at home base.  Students who are not dressed are unprepared for class and will receive a consequence.

It is expected that students will be respectful, courteous, and cooperative with teachers and classmates.  Proper response to directions and requests is vital to a productive and safe environment.  Participation should be with your best effort.

Gum, candy, drink, or foodstuffs are not permitted in the locker room or activity areas.
